The name of the retreat house is “Maranatha”, an ancient Aramaic term that occurs only once in the New Testament, at the end of the Apostle Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians (1 Cor. 16:22).<\/p>\n
If the term “Maranatha” is read as Marana Tha, the formula contains an imperative in addition to the verb. That is, the phrase sounds as if we are asking the Lord to come, “O Lord, come.” Such expressions are found in the Book of Revelation (Rev. 22:20) and at the end of the Apostle Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians (1 Cor. 16:22).<\/p>\n
However, if the phrase is read as Maran Atha, its meaning changes radically: it becomes an affirmation, a confession of faith, clearly stating that “Our Lord has come”, equivalent to the statements found in Rom. 10:9 and 1 Cor. 12:3, where Paul affirms that “Jesus is Lord”.<\/p>\n
In both cases, Maranatha is a confirmation of faith in the Lord who became man and lived among us (cf. John 1:14) and who will come again. It is a messianic statement that expresses both faith in the Incarnation and expectation of the second coming of Christ.<\/p>\n
